Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting your fuse board replaced.

Cost & Timing

How much does a consumer unit replacement cost?

A standard domestic consumer unit replacement typically costs between £650 and £1,500 +VAT depending on the size of the property and the number of circuits. We provide free, no-obligation quotes so you know the exact cost before any work starts.

How long does it take to replace a fuse board?

Most domestic consumer unit replacements are completed in a single day, usually between 4 and 8 hours. Your power will need to be off during the changeover but we aim to minimise disruption.

Will my power be off all day?

Your power will need to be off for the main changeover period, which is typically a few hours. We plan the work to minimise inconvenience and will let you know roughly how long to expect before we start.

Safety & Regulations

Do I need to replace my old fuse box?

If your property still has a rewireable fuse board, or a consumer unit without RCD protection, replacing it is one of the most important safety improvements you can make. RCDs detect faults and cut power in milliseconds, drastically reducing the risk of electric shock and electrical fires.

What is an RCD and why do I need one?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) monitors the electrical current in your circuits. If it detects a fault — like current leaking through a person or damaged cable — it trips the circuit in milliseconds. Much faster than a fuse alone, and it's required by current wiring regulations on most circuits.

What's the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD protects a group of circuits — if it trips, they all lose power. An RCBO protects a single circuit, so a fault on one won't affect the rest. RCBO boards cost more but give better protection. We can advise which suits your property.

Is a consumer unit replacement covered by building regulations?

Yes. It's notifiable work under Part P of the building regulations. As a NAPIT approved electrician, we self-certify this work and issue the required compliance certificate — no separate building control visit needed.

Landlords

I'm a landlord — do I legally need to upgrade my fuse board?

Since June 2020, landlords must have electrical installations inspected every 5 years with an EICR. If the report flags the consumer unit as unsatisfactory — for example, lacking RCD protection — you must carry out the remedial work. An outdated fuse board is one of the most common reasons for a failed EICR.

The Work

Can you replace my fuse board without rewiring the whole house?

In most cases, yes. A consumer unit replacement is a standalone job. If we find any issues with the wiring during testing, we'll let you know and discuss options — but a full rewire isn't usually needed just for a board change.

Do you provide certificates after the work?

Yes. Every job comes with the appropriate electrical certificates — an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and a building regulations compliance certificate. Important to keep for your records, insurance, and if you sell the property.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. We install and replace consumer units for shops, offices, workshops, and industrial units, as well as domestic and rental properties.

What areas do you cover?

We're based in Bishop's Waltham and cover roughly a 10-mile radius, including Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester, Fareham, Eastleigh, Hedge End, Botley, Wickham, and many more. See the full list →
